A Community Responds explores the human response by the communities most affected by the AIDS epidemic at a time when politicians, and most notably President of the United States would not acknowledge the disease. In cities across the US, gay and lesbian communities, responded to AIDS with informational campaigns, organized community support, and a galvanizing of community resources in dynamic and creative ways distinct to American LGBT culture.

Featuring photos by Jim Marks, who spent 10 years as a photojournalist for The Advocate and OutWeek, and as a freelance photographer covering national events in the gay community. In 2014, Stonewall National Archives became a repository for the Jim Marks Collection, a major contribution consisting of over 30,000 prints and photos.
